South Lake Union's Holiday Season Comes Down to a Few Nights on the Lake

October 29, 2026

The Argosy Christmas Ship sails for almost four weeks this year. How many of those nights does it leave from Lake Union Park? Two.

The festival runs November 27 through December 23, 2026, and the only Lake Union Park departures on the schedule are Friday, December 11 and Wednesday, December 23. Most of South Lake Union's late-fall calendar works the same way. From June through November, weekends here centered on the Saturday Market beside the Spheres. After it closes, the season moves to the south shore of Lake Union and to a handful of fixed dates. Miss those dates and the lakefront goes quiet until spring.

Here's how the next seven weeks play out, starting today.

The Spheres Have Three Saturdays Left

The South Lake Union Saturday Market had a different setup in 2026. For its 11th season it moved next to the Spheres and became a full farmers market. Discover SLU's listing describes more than 100 booths a week, with Washington-grown produce, local food makers and pantry staples alongside the curbside brunch it was already known for.

The season ends November 21. That leaves November 7, November 14 and November 21. After that, South Lake Union has no regular weekend event on its calendar until the market comes back. Discover SLU's market page lists the 2026 season dates.

November 14 is the one to circle, because the market overlaps with the first day of a new exhibit at MOHAI.

MOHAI Fills the Gap Through Winter

The Museum of History & Industry at 860 Terry Ave N has the most going on in the neighborhood between the market's last day and the new year. The exhibits and evenings it has scheduled cover every week of that stretch.

  • Power Up: Clean Energy and You opened October 24, 2026.
  • Sunday Best: Unpacking the Wardrobe of Rev. Samuel McKinney runs November 14, 2026 through March 18, 2027. It shows garments worn by Rev. McKinney and his wife, Louise, and it's included with museum admission.
  • Free First Thursday gets you into the permanent exhibits at no cost from 5 to 8 p.m. The November edition is tonight, November 5. The next one is December 3.
  • Holiday History Extravaganza with Vanishing Seattle is Wednesday, December 16, from 7 to 10 p.m. The adults-only night has Drag Bingo, local trivia, festive film clips, maritime jingles and guest DJs, with sliding-scale admission of $15 to $50.

MOHAI's exhibit page has the details on Sunday Best. The Holiday History Extravaganza listing covers tickets for December 16.

MOHAI lists Power Up as part of the free First Thursday evenings. Sunday Best is included with regular museum admission.

The Wooden Boats Go Quiet in Two Steps

Next door, the Center for Wooden Boats at 1010 Valley St has already switched to its off-season schedule. Winter museum hours run Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., from October 21 through March 19, and boat rentals don't resume until March 20, 2027.

Its holiday calendar has two closures:

  1. Thanksgiving, November 26. Closed for the day.
  2. December 14, 2026 through January 1, 2027. Closed for nearly three weeks.

The second closure matters most for planning. December 13 is the last day the boathouse is open this year. When the Christmas Ship makes its final Lake Union Park stop on December 23, the Center for Wooden Boats will already be closed. Current hours are posted on the CWB hours page.

December 11 Is the Night Everything Overlaps

Line the calendars up and one date stands out. On Friday, December 11, the Center for Wooden Boats is still open during the day, MOHAI's Sunday Best exhibit is on view, and the Christmas Ship leaves from Lake Union Park twice.

Date Sailing from Lake Union Park What's attached to it
Fri., Dec. 11 5:00–6:30 p.m. The Dickens Carolers aboard, with a shoreline performance at ASUW Shell House from 5:35 to 5:55 p.m.
Fri., Dec. 11 8:00–9:30 p.m. Parade of Boats sailing, with a 21+ Follow Boat option
Wed., Dec. 23 2:00–3:45 p.m. Grand Finale sailing
Wed., Dec. 23 5:00–6:30 p.m. Grand Finale sailing
Wed., Dec. 23 8:00–9:45 p.m. Grand Finale sailing

Argosy says every sailing carries a live choir, and on 2 p.m. sailings kids get cookies with Santa and a coloring surprise. The December 23 shoreline stops are the Ballard Locks, Ivar's Salmon House, Fritz Hedges Waterway Park and Gas Works Park. Argosy notes that times and locations can change, so check the festival schedule before you book.

The Parade of Boats Leaves the Neighborhood

The 8 p.m. sailing on December 11 is tied to the Parade of Boats. Decorated private boats gather on Lake Union and head down the Fremont Cut. Boat owners can join for free. On land, the public viewing event is at Evanston Plaza from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., and boats start passing at about 8:20 p.m.

So the parade forms on South Lake Union's lake, but the organized place to watch it is in Fremont. If you don't have a ticket for the 8 p.m. sailing, the fastest way to see the boats up close is a short trip north to the Cut. Argosy's Parade of Boats page has the boat registration details.

The Shoreline's Next Tenants Are Local Names

The lakefront's calendar is short this year, and so is the list of new businesses on it. The changes that are on the way all go in the same direction. Seattle and Eastside operators are moving into spaces along the water.

Analog Coffee at 1200 Westlake Ave N. Capitol Hill Seattle Blog reported on October 7 that a city signage permit had been issued for Analog to move into the former Starbucks in the AGC Building and Marina, on the west side of the lake. The space is on the ground floor next to the 10-story office tower and can handle a drive-through. Founders Danny Hanlon and Tim Hayden have run their original cafe at 235 Summit Ave E for 15 years and once said it would be the only shop they ever opened. No opening date had been announced when CHS published.

Cantina Monarca at Lake Union Piers. MyNorthwest reported on October 24 that the Bellevue restaurant plans an 11,000-square-foot Seattle location at Lake Union Piers. It will have indoor and outdoor dining, plus views of the lake and the Space Needle. Leadership is aiming for next summer. The restaurant's own announcement splits that into about 8,300 square feet indoors and a 2,700-square-foot patio, and names founder Bernie Garcia and Elev8 Hospitality Group. The Lake Union Piers directory lists Daniel's Broiler and The Cove as current tenants. A summer 2027 target is a plan, and plans can move.

A Few Blocks Inland

Two smaller shops off the water fit the indoor, cold-weather months better than anything on the lake.

The Craft Room at 400 Fairview Ave N opened April 5. Jenelle Melchior runs it, selling donated and gently used craft supplies and hosting workshops, according to Discover SLU. For anyone making their own holiday cards or gift wrap, it's the closest supply stop in the neighborhood.

Juice Time at 903 Dexter Ave N says in its own October 22 release that the juice-and-dessert shop is open daily, with a grand opening set for October 31 from noon to 8 p.m.

Getting to the Lake Around the J Line Work

If you're walking to MOHAI or Lake Union Park from the south end of the neighborhood, RapidRide J construction is changing the route. SDOT's project page, updated October 23, lists nighttime electrical and sidewalk work at Virginia St and Boren Ave. The southeast corner is closed, with pedestrian detours. SDOT also scheduled electrical work and repaving on Virginia between 6th Ave and Westlake Ave for three straight weekends, starting as soon as the weekend of October 24. If it started on schedule, that work wraps up around the November 7–8 weekend. SDOT is also holding an online open house for the project tonight, November 5. The RapidRide J project page posts the latest closures.

Laid out in order, the season runs like this. The market has its last Saturdays November 7, 14 and 21. MOHAI's free evenings are November 5 and December 3. The Center for Wooden Boats is open until December 13. The Christmas Ship leaves from Lake Union Park on December 11, then for the last time on December 23.

Living close enough to walk to the Christmas Ship's Lake Union Park departures, or watching the Parade of Boats form from your own window, is a very specific thing to want from a home. It's the kind of detail the team at TeamUp Seattle pays attention to when we help clients compare buildings and blocks around the lake.
